We inform our clients that the amendment to the law on the entry and residence of third-country nationals has been approved by the Hungarian Parliament, therefore neither the National Directorate General for Alien Policing (decisionmaker in cases of resident permit) nor the Hungarian embassies will accept applications for new residence permits between January 1 and February 29, 2024. The validity of residence permits expiring during this period will be automatically extended until 30 April 2024. The assessment of ongoing cases was also suspended by the Hungarian immigration authority until March 1, 2024.
The holders of such expired residence permits may not cross the external borders of other EU Member States as they do not hold a valid residence permit.
However, in the case of university students, the Hungarian government has made an exception, and accordingly, they can submit their applications during this period as well, after prior e-mail consultation with our Consulate
